Our project is a charming “Joy” pillow—perfect for kicking off our Christmas projects. This class will be a little different: we’ll use decorative stitches to embellish our pillows while learning more about our machines and their features. Along the way, we’ll explore simple paper piecing, appliqué, and pillow making.
- Fabrics:
- Assorted scrap fabrics, four to five colors coordinating with your embroidery design
- White fabric, cut 12″ by 15″ (will be trimmed to 10″ by 7″ after embroidery)
- 4 2½” squares of white fabric (If you cut carefully, you should be able to get these from the trimmings of your embroidered fabric)
- Fabric for pillow back: pre-quilted fabric – 2 pieces cut 13″ by 10″ Or to Quilt Your Own: § 4 pieces of fabric cut 13″ by 10″ plus two pieces of batting cut 13″ by 10″
- 2 pieces of batting or muslin 12″ by 15″
- Notions:
- Zipper at least 14″ long
- 1 ½ yards piping or we can make you a ruffle
- 1 piece of quilt batting 12″ by 15″
- Polyester stuffing
- Ribbon and trim scraps – ¼” to ½” wide
- Tools:
- Rotary Cutter
- Quilting Ruler
- Embroidery Supplies:
- Tear Away stabilizer
- Embroidery Thread for your design
- Other: 2 copies of paper piecing templates, printed from this pattern. I will have the templates you need.

- Note: Designs from this collection can be purchased separately for $1. If you want “Believe” on your pillow, then only purchase that one design.
Your embroidery machine, your embroidery/sewing supplies and don’t forget your power cord and foot pedal.
